Shillong

Shillong was first the capital of Assam and soon became the capital of Meghalaya, when the state was formed. The place is home to several waterfalls and at times is hailed as the Scotland of the East. What makes Shillong an interesting place worth visit is the cool factor that this very place witnesses a rather longer monsoon and subsequently followed by a heavy rainfall than the rest of India – which makes Shillong to unveil all of its beauty without a second thought.

As this one is a rainy place, let’s start off with a beautiful lake - Umiam Lake. Tourists, who have visited the place, have given big thumbs up review to it and the most important thing about the lake is that this one is a man made one. Consisting of a ‘water sports complex’, there is a garden by the side of the water sports complex. Coming to the next one - The Don Bosco Centre on Indigenous Cultures, which is run by the Salesian order of the Catholic Church, gives a fantastic piece of knowledge about the entire North Eastern states in India. The centre boasts an amazing collection of tribal weapons, ornamentation and rare photographs – which apparently also make it as the largest cultural museum in the whole Asia. Yet another man – made lake in Shillong, the Wards Lake too is surrounded by a large garden and boating facilities are readily available therein the lake.

On the other hand, the Lady Hydari Park is home to a wide variety of local flowering plants. A small zoo too functions therein and there do exist some leisure time – passes for the children. A popular picnic spot, you can also spot a deer park, which is spread over more than one kilometre. Sweet Falls, on the other hand is located in the ‘Happy Valley’ and is a very steep fall as well. The Bishop & Beadon Falls that is located in Suna valley offer a visually enchanting experience. You will also spot some wild animals therein such as deer, leopard, langurs and to name a few others. Another visually great falls, the Elephant Falls is scenic and is considered as a collection of smaller falls.

Now into something different from the waterfall stories, we have Shillong Peak therein, which is the highest point in state of Meghalaya. Giving you the view of the whole Shillong city, this place also hosts a radar station for the Indian Air force. Any student of zoology will find the Butterfly Museum as an enigmatic experience, which gives the in-depth details of the huge collection of different types of butterflies. You will spot some rarest species of butterflies therein the museum and you will simply love the whole surroundings there. The Shillong Golf course is the first golf course of India which has 18 holes in it. Backed with some fantastic natural surroundings, this one is situated in a unique place. Don't miss this place !
