Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu

Mahabalipuram or also known as Mamallapuram, is a town situated in the Kancheepuram district in Tamil Nadu. At a distance about 60 km from Chennai, the place is home to numerous monuments that have been classified as world heritage site by the UNESCO. The place was also a significant seaport during the ancient time.

                The Mahabalipuram Beach, which is located at the distance of some 60 km south of Chennai, has a 20 km long beach, which came into notice only after 20th century. However, soon the beach gained popularity as the place is filled with some bustling activities such as sunbathing, diving, wind surfing and motor boating, which all excites the tourist visiting there. You can find a whole lot of beach activities and the ideal option would be visiting it during November and February. The beach has also some well carved out monolithic rathas and rock – cut temples.   

        As far as going with the shore temples, you have some precious sights there, which dates back to the period of 8th century AD and are a combination of three shrines as well. Created by the Pallavas they are situated on the seashore of Mahabalipuram. They are considered to be some of the oldest temples in South India. They are recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

On the other hand, ‘Dakshinachitra’ can be considered as a heritage village and is situated on the Mahabalipuram beach. You can find a whole lot of artistic South Indian craft industries there featured in the village. These Five Rathas are a rock-cut temple built in late 7th century by the Pallavas and are also classified as World heritage sites by the UNESCO. Boasting a collection of over 3000 sculptures of gods and goddesses, the Sculpture Museum in Mahabalipuram, too attracts large number of tourists there. On the other hand, the ‘Krishna's Butterball’ is a large rock on the hillside on the other side of the Mahabalipuram beach and is quite famous spot among tourists. Mahishamardini Cave – These monolithic sculptures located in Mahabalipuram, have caves dating back to the 7th century and depict the Pallava form of arts. The other interesting features of Mahabalipuram include that of Arjuna's Penance, Tiger's Cave, and Descent of the Ganges as well.

                The most interesting feature about Mahabalipuram is that the place is abundant with quite a lot of cave temples, such as Trimurti Cave Temple, Varaha Cave Temple, Thirukalukundram, all of which offers quite a different experience. While the former is built on a 100 ft high cliff, Varaha cave temple is constructed on the rocky walls of the granite hill. However, the Thirukalukundram temple is situated on top of the hill and has beautiful inscriptions in Dutch, English and ancient Indian language as well. Similarly, Mahabalipuram presents you a wide range of options – each giving an entirely different experience.
