Haryana is a wonderful option for a pleasure trip as it comes with some great features. A rather tiny - small state in India, Haryana is situated in the foothills of Aravali. Though it is small in size, the kind of historical importance that it carries is of huge in amount. The literal name of ‘Haryana’ can be translated to ‘Home of Hari (God Vishnu)’. Also the place is attached with mythological stories that are very popular in India; indeed, they are considered as the code of conduct by many. Witnessed the rise and fall of many empires, Haryana is the place, wherein the great battle of Mahabharata had occurred, according to the legends. Well, Haryana is rather a place that has to be seen as culturally important and you can definitely go and have some wonderful sights of sites that you once heard in stories. So, it is definitely a place that carries a lot of affection in the minds of Indian people.
With the Delhi’s National Capital Region covering a large part of the state of Haryana, there are some visible signs of the kind of arrangements made by the Govt. in considering the tourism development and allied departments. With plenty of options available there for accessibility to various locations, especially to NCR, going to Haryana is as easy as it sounds. The sites that are historically relevant are been preserved with much care by the Haryana Tourism Department and the kind of developments undertaking there are promising as well. However, if you happen to land in the state coining with that of the ‘Suraj Kund Crafts Mela’ that is being organized by the Haryana Tourism Department, then you should never miss the opportunity to attend the renowned cultural fest of Haryana that showcases the rich handicraft - folk music - dance - handloom - pottery tradition, which Haryana boasts.
And now, let’s have a look through the major tourism attractions, which the state of Haryana offers you. Starting off with ‘Morni Hills’, you can go for a fantastic journey through the hearts of India. The hills that are at a height of over 1200 meters above the sea level, is believed to have received the name after the Queen Morni, who once is believed to have ruled the place around here. The place indeed offers a calm and quiet atmosphere with a perfect blend of natural beauty associated with that of adventurous lovers’ tastes as well. However, it gets crowded in seasons with nature lovers from various locations flocking to get a vision of some rare bird communities such as Crested Kingfisher, Red Peafowl, Himalayan Bulbul to name a few. As said earlier, the trekking experience through the hills is obviously one of the biggest attractions. Situated at a distance of nearly 45 km from the state capital Chandigarh, Morni Hills carries some religious importance as well among the natives.
When going to Haryana, the one place that readily comes to your mind might be ‘Kurukshethra’ (at least for me and my friends, it was the first name that struck when we decided to head towards the state). The ancient place that is home to many mythological stories as well as historically important events, is situated at a distance of just over 100 km from the capital city, Chandigarh. With a story that dates back to B.C 2800, you can watch a whole lot of Hindu sculptures and mythologically associated figure in Kurukshetra. So, if you are an avid lover of historically important sites, then this is the most ideal place for you to spend your whole day. Similar is the case with ‘Ambala’, which too hosts a whole lot of stories attached behind its name and can give you the much needed information to the culture and diversity of India. You can have a look at ‘Bhawani Ambala Temple’. Ambala in fact gives you a perfect religious outing with many ‘Gurdwaras’ as well there, the main ones being Badshahi Bag Gurudwara, Manji Sahib Gurudwara, Sis Ganj Gurudwara and to name a few. See, what you can get from there all is not only just the kind of religious performances, but also an insight to the many untold stories from the past days. However, we can’t term ‘Ambala’ as a religious centre only, but on the other hand, you can have a number of parks for recreational activities as well, for which we are not going to the details now.
With places such as Hemu Samadhi Sthal, grave of Ibrahim Lodhi, Kabuli Bagh, you will just love visiting ‘Panipat’, yet another historically important place. Along with being the world’s biggest Shoddy Yarn, the city of Panipat can give you a similar kind of feeling that we dealt earlier. A rich history lying in the background, Panipat is now home to many factories, especially that of weaving looms that just easily helped it to adjust the tagline of ‘city of handloom’. Having National Dairy Research Institute, Indian Agricultural Research Institute and Directorate of Wheat Research and National Bureau of Animal Genetics Research etc, the city of Karnal can show you the face of coming of age of India. The city though accounts for a major chunk of agricultural output of the state of Haryana, it never lags behind in terms of industrialization. Down South of Karnal, you have Yamuna Nagar - a yet another emerging city. Well, you can have a great experience there with ‘Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary’, which is situated in the Eastern part of Yamuna Nagar. On the other hand, Aadi Badri - a major pilgrimage centre, can surely woo you during the seasons, with the kind of atmosphere it provides.
The town of Manesar, which is a part of the National Capital Region, however happened to be one of the most lively places in Haryana. Maybe it is due to the proximity to the NCR, Manesar really is a thriving city. Apart from many other development activities, Manesar has bowled over the tourists visiting there with its atmosphere. Lying in a hilltop, this place has many more things to explore in it such as ‘Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary’, the gorgeous ‘Damdama lake’. ‘Mata Sheetala Temple’ is another major attraction there. With the likes of ‘Tomb of Sheikh Musa’ in Nuh in the close proximity, the city too has some historical relevance as well. Among the Chandigarh Tri Cities, ‘Panchkula’ is another great option in Haryana. The satellite city of Chandigarh, approximately forty percent of the land area of it is been covered by forest area. The forests are abundant with Mango Trees apart from the likes of Sheesham, Kikkar etc. Another important factor that constitute tourist inflow to the place is it’s closeness with hill stations of Kalka, Pinjore, Nahan, Shimla, Kasauli and Chali.
Now we can come to the two of the most important places in the city of Haryana, both in terms of economic activities as well as tourist inflow. The city of Faridabad hosts the annual festival of ‘Suraj Kunda Mela’ that is being conducted in the month of February. This is the time when the city of Faridabad witnesses the most number of tourists in a year. As mentioned earlier, the art lovers across the country never misses an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the festival. Another thing for which Faridabad quite famous is for the production of ‘Henna’. Tourists can avail the time in order to purchase the best Mehendi Powder in the country. Apart from from the scenic Badkhal lake and Baba Farid Tomb, what attracts the tourist here is the Raja Nahar Singh Palace. This huge mansion is home to many past records and has an exquisite collection of antique pieces as well. As we dealt with Faridabad, the one that is coming next is Gurgaon. Once the home to large farming activities, the city has transformed itself into a major financial centre in the country. A satellite city of Delhi, Gurgaon is often called ‘Millennium City’. Arguably the mall capital of India, Gurgaon is home to many corporate houses, but on the other hand what make it interesting in terms of the tourism front are two lakes there in the outskirts of the city -’Sultanpur Lake’ and ‘Sohna Lake’ - both are extremely popular and are visited mainly in winter season.
The state of Haryana has a lot more options in it to explore than the ones mentioned above. However, the only thing that you have to take care while visiting there is to avoid the summer period. Most of the places there experience extreme conditions during summer and take a ‘U’ turn during the winter seasons. So, that makes winter season the best time to visit Haryana.
