Alappuzha - The Venice of East

‘The Venice of East’ - This has been the name given by the tourists for Alappuzha. One of the most loved holiday destinations in God’s own Country - Kerala, Alappuzha is the smallest district of the state. The place hosts tons of tourists - both domestic and international, each day. What make Alappuzha this much interesting is the sprawling paddy fields along with the magnificent experience while travelling through the enchanting backwaters. A historically important place as well, Alappuzha is home to numerous attractive tourist places across the land and also makes it easy for the tourists to travel to other popular tourist destinations in Kerala, such as Kochi, Trivandrum, Kollam etc, mainly due to the proximity of distance between all the places. In fact, Alappuzha is situated in between two of the major cities in Kerala - Kochi and Trivandrum.

While going through Alappuzha, what comes strikingly to the mind is that, unlike most of the tourist locations around, this place is one of the most preferred tourist destination, albeit the change of weather. In a sense, the place happens to be in the list of all time favorite locations in Kerala. There are quite some places to explore in Alappuzha. It is a matter of great confusion for anyone to start narrating the beauty of this place from a particular choice to start with (However, I have to start at any cost; that is why you are all reading this article, right…!) So, lets’ first start with ‘Pathiramanal’. While Alappuzha itself is sometimes considered as an Island, ‘Pathiramanal’ - this particular island in the district deserves a special kind of mention from as it is one of the most beautiful islands that you come to see in Alappuzha. Situated in Vembanad lake, Pathiramanal is home to thousands of migratory birds from diverse locations across the world. However, you also have to keep in mind that this place is only accessible through boat and there are no alternatives to reach there. Well, a boat ride through Kumarakom - Muhamma route is always a pleasure for anyone. So, it won’t cause any concerns either.

You might have heard about ‘Kuttanad’. The particular place is often called the rice bowl of the state of Kerala. It is also notable that the tiny ‘Kuttanad’, which is situated below the sea level, has managed to cater the need of feeding rice for the entire state of Kerala. Also, this is one of the very few places elsewhere, which cultivates food items below sea level. Not only rice, but many more items are being cultivated here, such as banana, cassava, yam to name a few. However, one thing that you have to admit here is that it is a fantastic experience to travel through the inland waterways, while having the vision of land level well below your travel path. Well, we now have to speak about the beautiful ‘Alappuzha Beach’. The beach, which witnesses a large inflow of tourists, is home to the 137 year old pier - a major attraction of the place. Another feature that makes Alappuzha beach an enjoyable experience is visiting the place enable you to travel to many of the beautiful places across Alappuzha in no time. You can also access the ‘Vijaya Beach Park’ that is well attached to the Alappuzha beach. Children will love the park and the park is very cheap shelling out INR 2; however, children below the age of 5 can have a free entry as well. The ‘Sea View Park’ is another option right there. The boating facilities along with swimming options make this one worth a visit as well. Alappuzha also homes ‘The Central Plantation Crop Research Institute’ and can guide you to the deep knowledge about coconut plants. It is a great option for the ones, who are interested in such scientific knowledge.

On the other hand, if you are a history lover, you can explore plenty of things out there in Alappuzha. Be it the Krishnapuram Palace, Karumadi, Punnapra, a traveller is entitled for a great historic journey through them. The case with Krishnapuram palace is quite interesting. Built during the Travancore monarch reign in the 18th century, the palace displays the archeological characteristics of typical ancient Kerala. It is also home to one of the largest mural paintings in Kerala - Gajendra Moksham. With the measurements of 14 feet by 11 feet, this one definitely opens your jaw, for sure. However, in order to have the vision of the many other interesting things such as the plenty of antique sculptures and of the likes, you will have to travel a distance of 47 km from Alappuzha through the Alappuzha - Kollam routes (Of course, the palace is situated there..!). While taking into account the distance from Alappuzha, you can think about ‘Ambalapuzha’, which is also a notable pilgrim centre in Kerala, due to the presence of Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna Temple. And, how can you leave the delicious Palpayasam that is been served in the temple….! The pudding arguably, is one of the most talked one across the state for its unique taste and many imitations have been tried out by many people. Just 14 km from Alappuzha, this temple shows you the typical temple architecture that was present in ancient Kerala. The temple, which has witnessed numerous historically important events in the past, will definitely be a treat to your eyes in the months of March/April - the time, when it’s main festival takes place.

Just a short travel from Ambalapuzha, land you in Karumadi. You can have the vision of an ancient black granite Buddha figure, that was expected to have built in the 9th or 10th century. In order to have a look at an even newer history of the state, you obviously can go to ‘Punnapra’. A historically important place, Punnapra boasts an important place  during the freedom struggle movements of the Country. You can have the view of memorial of martyrs there in Punnapra. The list of other interesting places to visit in Alappuzha includes Arthunkal, Edathua Church, Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple, Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple etc. So in short, visiting Alappuzha is not going to cost you a single waste hour as you will definitely feel out of time to enjoy the whole beauty of the place.
With the place being an attractive tourist place, various facilities have been arranged by govt. and various private agencies. Having said that, I would like to add one more thing here - obviously you can avail the service of govt. run agencies as it costs much less when compared to that of private ones. For foreigners, there are frequent shows that feature the traditional art forms of Kerala - another major attraction for the foreigners. However, when considering the food habits there, it won’t make you to think twice before attacking the plates and having the whole food in one sit. That is the kind of deliciousness the foods here are usually associated with. Traditional Kerala foods can be availed easily here such as Puttu & Kadala, Appam, Idli, Dosa, Egg Curry and how can one leave the fish curry, in which Alappuzha residents seem to be keeping a secret recipe.
