Jammu is the winter capital of the northernmost state of the country – Jammu & Kashmir. The picturesque place is often called the city of temples. You have quite a lot of places round there in Jammu to roam around, as the city is home to not only temples, but also many gorgeous picnic spots as well.
As we already mentioned earlier, Jammu is often called the city of temples and if we are starting the count in that aspect, we have ‘Raghunath Temple’ occupying the pole position. Placed in the heart of the city, this lord Rama temple is arguably the most famous shrine in Jammu. You can have the view of some big statues of gods and goddesses out there in the middle of this temple. Another major attraction in the sense of religious aspect is ‘Ranbireshwar Temple’. Having an eight feet long central ‘Shiva Lingam’ enshrined inside, ‘Ranbireshwar Temple’ is the most famous temple in the city, which is dedicated to lord Shiva.
Well, it is not only in terms of religious aspects that the city is famous for; on the other hand, it has some nicely carved out historically important sites right there in the form of ‘Bahu Fort’, ‘Mubarak Mandi Palace’, ‘Amar Mahal Palace’ etc. While the ‘Mubarak Mandi Palace’ displays some wonderful architectural structures such as ‘Sheesh Mahal’, ‘Pink Mahal’, it also has a wonderful art gallery in the form of ‘Dogra Art Gallery’ – It displays some great paintings belonging to the Jammu & Basohli School of paintings. Similarly, you can visit ‘Amar Mahal Palace’, which is situated on the banks of Tawi River. The palace has some rare art collections as well as a great architecture structure. However, if you prefer to go to the opposite side of Tawi River, then you have ‘Bahu Fort’ there – a major picnic spot in the city.
The immediate place that you can catch up right from the city of Jammu, while taking a drive from the city is ‘Akhnoor’. Placed on the banks of Chenab River, this one is an important site of the Indus Valley Civilization. Located at a distance of 35 km long from the city of Jammu, ‘Jhajjar Kotti’ is a famous picnic spot that is essentially in the banks of the Jhajjar rivulet. On the other hand, if you are an ardent lover of natural beauty, then ‘Jassota Sanctuary’ is a must visit place for you. It is home to barking deer, wild boar etc. ‘Surinar Lake’ is another major attraction in Jammu and you cannot deny the enchanting beauty of this beautiful landscape.
