Built between 14th and 16th century, the monuments of Vijayanagara city, are a perfect example of the kind of architectural greatness of the kingdom, especially that of Krishnadeva Raya – who is often termed as the greatest ruler of the dynasty. The ruins of some mega structures, which cover an area of 26 sq km is definitely a great site to visit. What is interesting with all these structures that, all the temples in this city are bestowed with incredible dimensions and are included with a wide variety of delicate carvings. ‘Krishnaswamy Temple’, which has Balakrishna idol installed in it, is a great structure there in the city. The temple, which is said to be built in the early part of 16th century, carries quite a lot stories from the history in its wings. On the other hand, ‘Pattabhirama Temple’ is often touted as the most impressive temple from the period. With a towered gateway in all the ascending stories, this temple offers a magnificent view to the past. Well, ‘Virupaksha Temple’ happens to be the sole one that is still been used for worship. You can also see some great deal of beautiful paintings in the ceiling of ‘Rangamantapa’. Another such an interesting temple that you can see in Hampi is the ‘Vittala Temple’ that has an impressive 56 pillar ‘Rangamantapa’. However, ‘Hazara Rama Temple’ unlike most other temples there in Hampi, was reserved for royal ceremonies. The temple is attributed with some great paintings and sculptures in the pillars and walls.
Apart from the impressive temples mentioned above, Hampi is also home to numerous other impressive sights. For example, the ‘Zanana Enclosure’ is the remains of three palaces, watch towers etc. King’s Palace is arguably the largest enclosure of two major platform structures and an impressive underground. The architectural superiority of all these is sure to woo you in big time. While Queen’s Bath has a stunningly ornate interior with projecting balconies and elegant corridors, Lotus Mahal boasts a great exterior view. What is more interesting about Lotus Mahal is that it is kind of architectural fusion of the Hindu as well as Muslim traditions. You can also opt to go to the ‘Archeological Museum’ that is functioning there in all the days, except during Fridays. The nearly 7 meter height monolith, ‘Lakshminarasimha’ is an awesome view as well. Like this, Hampi has numerous similar structures to make you wonder.
As you leave Hampi to see the other interesting places down there around the historically important site, you have ‘Tungabhadra Dam’ there, which is just over 17 km from Hampi. ‘Anegundi’, ‘Chitradurga’, ‘Huligi’ are some other interesting places to be visited while you leave Hampi.
