An eye
to explore the wonders of Wayanad
Have you ever
in your life time come across the vast expanse of crystal clear waters in a
power boat, cranking between the tiny islands that stipple the lake face? If
you have not, you should visit this place for sure.
Banasura
Sagar Dam is the largest earthen dam in India and the second largest in Asia, which
impound the waters of the Karamanathodu, a tributary of the Kabini River. The Dam
is made up of massive stacks of stones and boulders. It is situated about 15 km
from Kalpetta. Its picturesque beauty is enhanced by the strand of mountains
seen on the background.
Banasura Sagar Dam is built up in the Banasura
Lake and the nearby mountains you see in the background are called
Banasura Hills. According to legend, there was an Asura king of Banasura
who underwent severe repentance on the top of these hills and thus it was named
after him. The scenic mountains invite adventure tourists and the dam site is
an ideal starting point for trekking. During monsoon, visitors could see small
islands in the dam’s reservoir. They are formed when the flooded reservoir
submerges the surrounding areas. The
vast area of the crystal clear water of the dam dotted with small islands is a
photographer’s delight.
