Pondicherry

While walking through ‘Pondicherry’, one definitely forgets the fact that he is in India. The charming beauty of Pondicherry gives you the feeling that you have gone to France within a blink of second. That is said, the French inspired buildings and monuments take a whole lot of inspiration from French architecture, thanks to the once thriving France colony here. Nowadays, you won’t find the name Pondicherry in Govt. Records as the place was rechristened to Puducherry in the year 2006.

Heavily inspired from the traditional French way of lives, Pondicherry is quite famous for its beautiful views of sun rising and setting with the long and calm sea resting down there. Well, you won’t find a typical beach in Pondicherry. On the other hand, you have plenty of things to explore here, sans the overcrowded environment. Offering some striking sporting activities and a perfect way to relax your vacations (Coz, this is a place that blends enjoyment bound with spirituality that has its effect in each nook and corners of the city).

Places to visit:

There are enormous opportunities to explore herein Pondicherry, which makes you quite short of days to have fun in its extreme, if you are planning for a short trip. Well, starting with spirituality, one of the biggest attractions herein Pondicherry is the ‘Sri Aurobindo Ashram’, which is situated at the heart of the city. Open to all with no entry fee, this Ashram was founded in 1926 by Sri Aurobindo and Mirra Alfassa (The Mother), this ashram witnesses huge inflow of people round the time from across the globe. Like Aurobindo Ashram, the ‘Pondicherry museum’ too makes you worth a visit, for its wonderful collection of numerous antique sculptures, handicrafts and many historical records as well - practically, all of which gives you the day to day activities that took place in Pondicherry in the past. Another similar outing that you would find in Pondicherry is the ‘Botanical garden’ that is situated in a sprawling 22 acres of land. Home to some over 1500 species of plants, this garden also hosts six fountains, dancing fountain, children’s train and a large aquarium as well.

Then there comes ‘Auroville’, arguably one of the biggest attraction of visitors in this erstwhile French colony. An experimental township that accommodates people with various believes, cultures or even nationalities. Inside ‘Auroville’, you could see Matrimandir - an architectural shape that looks like a lotus and has a height of 30 meter. The figure is covered with golden discs and is an extremely superb visual when reflected in sunlight. If the above mentioned places offers you an excellent outing through spiritual path, ‘Promenade’ offers you one of the liveliest experiences in Pondicherry. A lively rocky beach that definitely offers you a cool experience with numerous eateries out there around.

Now, we could go through some of the interesting festivals that Pondicherry hosts. Starting off the year with pongal that is equally celebrated elsewhere in South India, is an auspicious day for Pondicherry as well. An attractive decoration that comes with a whole lot of mythical stories associated with it, can definitely make you feel like you are going through the soul of Tamil Nadu. Similarly you could go through some interesting festivals in the form of ‘Villannur Temple Car festival’ and ‘Sri Aurobindo birthday’ and a lot of the likes.See, what makes Pondicherry an even interesting place is this kind of diversity that it offers. An equally intriguing place is ‘Chunnambar Boat House’. Situated at Ariyankuppam - just over 7 km from Pondicherry, it is ideal for boating and a cool trip with your loved ones.

And yes, I am coming to that point..; Pondicherry homes to an amazing array of foods…..! Well, you can have anything at your table - from traditional Tamil Nadu food to that of the latest French dishes in an order. A perfect mix of seafood items, recipes of which cannot be forged out easily and handmade chocolates and the likes of it all make Pondicherry worth a visit for any foodie.

If you ask me about the best time to visit Pondicherry, I would prefer to say anytime that comes between the 365x24 circle of the year. Having said that, some may say that it is during October to March, in which Pondicherry becomes the most ideal spot to spend the eve. Though you can expect a hot bubbling Pondicherry during the time period of March to June, the place would never hesitate to welcome you with the same kind of freshness as always. In the meanwhile, during July to September, you could have a great monsoon in this beautiful city. That said, all of these make Pondicherry an ideal place to spend the days round the clock during anytime in the calendar.

How to reach:

Pondicherry is well connected to the rest of the place in the country - be it through road, rail and air..! Having frequent bus services from almost all the major cities across South India and especially that of from Tamil Nadu, the place can be in your reach at any time. Villupuram - the nearest railway station is situated at a distance of nearly 35 km from Pondicherry and is a major railway station as well. However, the airport in Pondicherry hosts only some small air carriers and domestic flights. However, Chennai - a major air traffic hub in India, caters to the need for international flights and is at a distance of 135 km from here.
