Agra – The Saga of Love

Agra – The ancient city, which is home to one of the seven wonders in the world – Taj Mahal, gives you the feeling that you have entered in the land of eternal love. The city of Agra has entered to the limelight during the Mughal Era and it has many historically relevant sites that can be explored during a beautiful holiday trip.
  
              There are many important sites that you could visit in Agra, the prime one being Taj Mahal. The symbol of eternal love, this beautiful structure was built during the era of Shah Jahan. Completing the final finishing touches in AD 1653, this marble structure gives you an insight to the great Persian architecture. One, who visits Agra, can go to Taj Mahal anytime between 6 am to 7 pm. On the approach road to Taj Mahal, you can see the beautiful Motilal Nehru Park. Built in 1982, the Taj Museum is another option, wherein you can get all the details of the construction of Taj Mahal. The museum has three galleries apart from the main hall and is worth a visit. On the other hand, Agra Fort, an important world heritage site, can be another great option in Agra. Built in AD 1565 on the banks of Yamuna, it is open to visitors from sunrise to sunset. Well, you cannot miss Ram Bagh, one of the earliest Mughal gardens in the history of India. Built by Babar and his daughter Zahra, the original name of this was ‘Aram Bagh’, which however was later rechristened to ‘Ram Bagh’ by Marathas.

                As we mentioned earlier, the city of Agra is home to numerous historically important sites and is home to many memorials as well. Out of them, Chini Ka Roza is a memorial to the well known poet ‘Allama Afzal Khan Shukrullah of Shiraz’. Apart from that, you can also have a look at Sikandra – the resting place of Akbar, which is in the outskirts of Agra city. Built by Nur Jahan, IItimad – Ud – Daulah’s Tomb is another important memorial. The memorial, which is made up of white marbles, is a great pleasure for eyes. While the above mentioned are the memorials, belonging to the Mughals, Mariyam’s Tomb, is dedicated to the Rajput princess ‘Mariam Zamani’, who was also the wife of Akbar. It is situated in the west side of Sikandra as well. Built in the year of 1648, the big Juma Masjid too attracts huge chunk of visitors.


                The above said are the places, which you can explore in the city of Agra. However, taking a short drive from the city can land you in some other memorable places as well. Situated in the ‘Surdas Reserved Forest’, Kaitham Lake is just 23 km away from Agra. Popular world heritage site, Fatehpur Sikri, Aligarh University, Keoladeo Ghana Natural Park, Van Vihar Wildlife Sanctuary etc. too are some other places that are situated in the proximity of Agra.
