Ajmer, Rajasthan

The place 'Ajmer' derived its name from 'Ajaymeru'. Ajmer was founded in the seventh century by Ajaipal Chauhan. The Dargah Sharif – the tomb of the Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, Ajmer is a popular pilgrimage and is revered by the Muslims. However, Pushkar Lake, for which Ajmer is the base, is a sacred spot for the Hindus. During the month of Kartik (October/November) devotees throng in large numbers here to bathe in the sacred lake. Surrounded by the Aravalli mountain range, Ajmer thus is unique in its own terms. 

The final resting place of Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti, Ajmer-e-Sharif is a place that is worshiped by the people of all religions. Irrespective of their faith and belief, thousands of pilgrims attends the annual Urs – The six day celebration, which is a testimony to the six-day prayer in isolation conducted by the Sufi Saint Khwaja. While Ajmer is a popular pilgrim centre, the place is also visited by thousands for visiting other places such as Adhai-din-ka-Jhonpra, Circuit House, and Government Museum, while Mayo College is an important institution functioning there. Swami Dayanand Saraswati Smarak, Sai Baba Ka Mandir, Chasma a Noor – which is also known as Happy Valley are the places worth a visit there in Ajmer.

However, taking a short drive from there will enable you to reach some exotic locations such as Pushkar - a picturesque township that lies just 13 km away from Ajmer. Dedicated to Lord Brahma and situated on the lake side, Jagat Pita Shri Brahma Mandir, is an important pilgrim centre. The months of October and November – when the famous ‘Pushkar Fair’ takes place, witness people flocking to the pilgrim centre in order to take a holy dip in the lake. The artificial lake, Foy Sagar can be a wonderful experience and the place is an excellent option to spend fine evenings. Mangliyawas, which is situated at just 26 km away from Ajmer, is quite famous for the two trees popularly known as Kalpa – Vriksha. On the other hand, the world renowned Kishangarh School of Painting, can be reached with a travel of barely half an hour from Ajmer. Similarly, some other interesting places such as Roopangarh – The capital of the Kishangarh family during the 17th and 18th centuries too are not so long away from Ajmer. 

The home town of famous saint poetess Meera Bai – Merta City can be a fascinating experience, especially with the city being a silent witness to many historical and cultural upheavals. Junia – a 16th century Rathore citadel too attracts people in large amount. Well, if you are an enthusiastic archeological treasure lover, then Baghera can be an ideal place for you. This small village is home to numerous archeological treasures as well as antiquarian relics. The temple in the town – ‘Varaha Avatar’ too is a place to visit. Well, don't miss ‘Todgarh’ and ‘Balunda’ as well during your trip.
