Badami, Karnataka

Situated in the state of Karnataka, ‘Badami’ can be an excellent option to explore many untold historical tales from the past of the country. During the ancient times, the place was known as ‘Vatapi’ and was once the capital of Chalukya realm. The place became world famous due to the presence of the magnificent rock cut cave temples that will tell you the story behind the architectural wonders of the past. The temples however are not at all the flag bearers of any particular religion. Well, the secular nature of them is visible with the placement of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu according to the Hindu believes and that of the Jain Trrthankaras.

The Badami caves are located in the close proximity of Badami town. They are at a distance of just over half kilometer from the Badami town. The main constituent of the caves are the group of four cave temples built out of hills. They are situated opposite to the famous Badami fort. The rock carvings tell you the kind of mastery that Chalukyas attained over the particular trade. The whole wonders were built during the time of Chalukya king Mangalesa, during whose rein that the structures were completed. These are one of the most famous artificial rock cave temples that you can explore. The ‘Badami Fort’ is another place that you can go there. A historically important place, it is situated at a distance of just over 5 km away from the railway station. The large granaries, treasury and water towers are the main attraction of this place. Badami Fort is also home to some impressive ancient temples as well. Another place of interest here is the ‘Museum & Art Gallery’. Located on the Bhutanatha temple road, this museum has a rich collection of many of the artistic treasures that can’t be found out
elsewhere. The gallery, which is maintained by the Archeological Survey of India, will be a great place for those who love such traditional treasures.

Well, if you have enough time after visiting the above mentioned places, which are in Badami, don’t miss out some other interesting places nearby. In ‘Aihole’, you can see some wonderful monuments that are attached with many historical events that took place during the 6th century. The place will tell you the glorifying past during the reign of ‘Pulikeshi I’ and ‘Pulikeshi II’. Aihole is located at a distance of 44 km from Badami. On the other hand, ‘Banashankari Temple’, which is at a distance of just above 50 km from Badami, garners huge amount of devotees annually. The shrine dedicated to Shakambhari, an incarnation of goddess Parvati, is located in the Bagalkot district in the state. The famous ‘Geludgud’, which can be accessed after a short drive of twenty minutes from Badami, witnesses huge inflow of Yoga enthusiasts there. Well, ‘Pattadakal’ – a world heritage site, ‘Nasanath Temple’ – attached with a lot of ancient mythical tales are some other interesting places that you can explore as well.
