A brackish water lagoon, Chilka Lake is spread over the districts of Puri, Khurda and Ganjam in Odisha. The lake is the second largest lagoon in the world as well as the largest one in India. It was in the year of 1981 that the Chilka Lake was designated as the first Indian wetland with international importance according to the Ramsar Convention.
Well, the lake, which contains several islands, such as Kalijai, Abode of Island Goddess, Nalabana to name a few. In order to visit the various islands, there are motorized yacht and speed boat services available. As we get into the details of the important locations near Chilka Lake, we can count ‘Avifauna’ – wherein you can spot many birds such as white bellied sea eagles, graylag geese, purple moorhen, jacana, and many more.
The Lake, which harbors the aquatic vegetation of its own, is typically represented by Algal forms. The place is abundant with quite a numbers of Phytoplankton and a few other species of brackish water and can be a great option for a great outing. If we are really into counting the huge fauna found in the Lake, then it is definitely going to be a mission impossible task for anyone. Having the floral composition of their own, the dunes and sandy areas of the beach near the lake is an excellent option for a unique experience.
As we mentioned, there are a wide variety of animal life forms that can be found in Chilka. The Lake and surrounding area representing a wide variety of groups of the animal kingdom that ranges from the likes of Protozoa to that of reptiles, birds and mammals. It is been recorded that around 158 spices of fishes and prawns and countless types of crabs, amphibians, reptiles, snake, lizards, turtles and crocodiles are found here. The recent discovery of rare species has increased the significance to this place. One can find Dolphins in the area near the Satapada-Magarmukha region as well as that in between Kalijai and Balugoan regions. Black buck, spotted dear, fox, jackal, jungle cat, hare and many countless mammals too are reported from small pockets in the surrounding hills.
As is the case with Chilka Lake, going for a short drive from the place will land you in even interesting places. One such is ‘Narayani’. The place, which is at a distance of just over 10 km from Chilka, is quite famous for the hill top temple dedicated to Goddess Narayani. It is a sacred place and is visited by many devotees on special occasions. Some similar places are the ‘Nirmal Jhar’ and that of ‘Banpur’. Both the places, which are some of the most visited places there and owes importance in both the religious aspects as well as that of being important picnic spots.
