Vadodara, Gujarat

Commonly called Baroda, Vadodara is situated on the banks of the Vishwamitri River. The city, which has many beautiful gardens, magnificent palaces and many institutions of learning, is the former capital of the princely Gaekwad state. Though it bears many historically relevant sites and is a historically important city, today it is a booming industrial and commercial centre.

Offering a striking combination of elements that incorporates an mix of Indian, Islamic, and European styles, the ‘Lakshmi Vilas Palace’ was built in accordance with that of the Indo-Saracenic tradition. Including that of a golf course and Sayajirao's personal museum, the palace grounds also contains many other displays, featuring some of the original paintings by Raja Ravi Varma. Arguably one of the architectural wonders, ‘Nayay Mandir’ is a famous landmark of the city of Vadodara. While we count the other historically important structures in the city, we can’t avoid the mighty ‘Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum’. The museum is one of the major attractions of Vadodara and has an exquisite collection of art works of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. Well, like that of Nayay Mandir, this place too has the works by Raja Ravi Varma. Kirti Mandir was buit by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III in the year of 1936. A memorial to the deceased members of the Gaekwad family, Kirti Mandir has murals of the cenotaph, which are painted by famous painter Nandalal Bose.

Designed according to the Indo-Italianate style, ‘Makarpura Palace’ is located in the outskirts of the Vadodara city and was once the residence of the ruling Gaekwad family there. Well, it is Indian Air Force, who is using this Palace right now, as their training school. Though public can’t have an access to the building, one can’t leave the 3-storey Italian Renaissance structure, situated outside.

Well, we have many more attractions there in and around the city of Vadodara, with the likes of ‘Nimeta’, ‘Ajwa Lake’, ‘Khambhatt’, etc. which are all situated nearby the city. All the above mentioned places offer quite stunning visuals of nature and are well preferred as picnic spots. Well, the historical place – ‘Champaner’, which is situated at the foot of the Pavagadh Fort, shows you the ruins of the mosques and palaces. However, ‘Pavagadh’ is also famous for Mahakali temple that draws large number of pilgrims daily. Same is the case with that of ‘Dabhoi Fort’, which is at a distance of just 30 km away from the main city. Known as ‘Darbhavati’, it was given a significant mention in the Jain scriptures of Girnar. On the other hand, ‘Anand’ – is home to Asia's largest milk co-operative, the Amul Dairy.

Like this way, we can find innumerous important places around Vadodara that shows you a striking combination of both historically relevant as well as picturesque locations. The case is no different with that of either ‘Halol’ or ‘Tuwa’, ‘Malsar’. They all serve quite some important functions as historically relevant places. The interesting thing is that all of them are situated under one hour journey from Vadodara.
