Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu


Often hailed as the heaven of honeymoon travelling couple, Kodaikanal is such a beautiful hill station in Tamil Nadu that is bestowed with the beauty of nature. Kodaikanal is nestled beautifully amidst the folds of the Pali hills, which mesmerizes you with its beauty and tranquility. Kodaikanal is home to many imposing features such as the rare 'Kurinji-flower', which blossoms once in 12 years, mighty rocks, beautiful waterfalls, a serene lake and to name many other features.

Berijam Lake, which is located some 21 km away from the city bus stand, is surrounded by Upper Palni Shola Forest reserve. You will get across many useful medicinal plants herein. Well, keeping in mind about the ever increasing pollution, a number of initiatives are taken to protect the lake and the area surrounding it. People, who visit Kodaikanal, often head towards Berijam Lake as their prime target.

Hosting an annual flower and vegetable show each year, Bryant Park attracts a large number of tourists across the country. Hosting a wide collection of flowers and many other plants, you can see a glass house in the garden. While you get a chance to visit the place during the month of May, then you should never miss an opportunity to take a look at ‘the annual horticulture show’. On the other hand in Shenbaganur Museum, you will get to see a large collection of many rare pieces of architecture from South India and it also houses a huge collection of beautiful flowers and bird species. They are sure to woo any visitor landing in Kodaikanal.

Boasting nearly 100 boats, the Boat Club in the city of Kodaikanal is quite a popular tourist destination of every visitor reaching in Kodaikanal for the purpose of entertainment. The club also offers membership to people as well. And well, we are into the Kodaikanal Lake next. This magnificent man-made lake spreads over an area of sixty acres and is surrounded by some lush greenery. The 'Pillar Rocks' in the region - measuring a height of about 122 meters, offer you a panoramic view of the Kodai Valley.

‘The Coaker's Walk’ is just one kilometer from the Kodaikanal Lake, you will simply love this place, which is endowed with all the naturally beautiful elements. However, you will need to secure a ticket in order to enter the place. The Guna Cave, also known as ‘Devil's Kitchen’,offer you an enchanting view; however, you have to make sure that you take the journey along with some local people, who are familiar with the place. You have some superb Telescope Houses therein, which provides you panoramic view of the valley and the nearby towns.

Take a journey from Kodaikanal and just some 8 km away from the town, you will reach ‘Silver Cascade fall’. The fall, which has a height of nearly 180 feet, Silver Cascade is such a wonderful fall that will spellbind you in no time. Similar is the case with ‘Bear Shola fall’ as well, wherein people used to visit in large groups – accompanied by both family members as well as with friends. No place in South India is out from accommodating at least one place that caters to the spiritual needs of people.

The case is no different from Kodaikanal as well, wherein you will get to see ‘Kurinji Andavar Temple’ meeting the particular need. About 3.2 km from the Lake, the presiding deity of the temple is Lord Murugan and you will also come across experiencing a picturesque view of the northern plains as well as the 'Palani Hills’.
