Coimbatore – an ancient city that witnessed many uprisings as well as the ruling of many rulers, has many tales reserved in it that give a detailed description of the stories related to Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, Pandyas, Hoysalas and the Vijayanagara kings. Known as Kodunad before, the current name of this city was given by the British rulers. Well that said, Coimbatore is a brimming commercial city in Tamil Nadu that is fastly growing to more and more advanced level of development. It is said that the place is home to over 60 spinning and weaving mills.
While uttering the major tourist attractions of this city, we can start off the journey with ‘Perur Patteeswarar Temple’. The temple, built by Karikala Chola, is dedicated to lord Shiva and is situated near river Noyyal. The idol here in this temple is known as Patteeswarar and his consort Pachai Nayaki. There is a hall called Kanagasabai, which is also known as Mel Chidambaram as well. During the months of March, a grand festival in the form of ‘Panguni Uthiram’ has been celebrated there in the temple. You can find a similar atmosphere in ‘Marudhamalai Temple’ as well. Located on a hillock, the presiding deity here is Dandayuthapani and the temple is dedicated to lord Murugan. On the other hand, ‘Karaimadai Ranganathar Temple’ is the second oldest temple in Coimbatore, which came into existence during the period of Vijayanagara kings.
Then there comes another attraction herein Coimbatore in the form of ‘Agricultural University’. The history of this University can be traced back to the year of 1968 and it came into existence in 1971. The 16th agricultural University of India, this one can be a great option for those who loves going for an informative journey through the latest knowledge in the field of agriculture. Another interesting place in Coimbatore is the ‘G.D. Naidu Industrial Exhibition’, which was established by late G.D. Naidu.
However taking a short drive from the main city will land you in some notable tourist locations. ‘Avinashi ‘is such a place. Located at a distance of nearly 40 km from the city, the history of ’Avinashi Lingeswarar temple’ can be traced back to 12th Century AD. ‘Dyanalingam’ is another interesting place with the site having a linga made up of a single black granite stone that stands at a staggering height of 13.9 ft tall. Then there are a wide variety of options such as ‘Kodumudi’, ‘Bannari’, ‘Pollachi’ etc. to name a few more.
However the most interesting experience during this drive from Coimbatore would be the journey itself as the place is abundant with various beautiful waterfalls such as Monkey Falls, Sengupathi Falls, Siruvani Falls and Vaidehi Falls. During your visit to Coimbatore, don’t miss the experience of going to these two hill stations as well – ‘Top Slip’ and ‘Coonoor’. Both are well under 100 km of distance from Coimbatore.
