Dhanushkodi, an abandoned town also known as a ghost city or ghost town is situated at the southern most tip in Tamil Nadu. It lies in south-eastern tip of Pamban Island. It is very near to Sri Lanka. The place suffered major damage in 1964 cyclone and the rail bridge connection was washed away. It’s a ruined city and the remains can be seen there.
But it’s blessed with natural beauty and has become a tourist place during day as permission is only to visit during day. Night stay is at Rameshwaram, 18 kms away. February, November and December are the best months to visit Dhanushkodi.
The Dhanushkodi Beach is a beautiful place. Other attractions include the Adam’s Bridge or Ram Sethu, Pamban Island and the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park.
The Adam’s Bridge is made of limestone that connects Indian and Sri Lankan mainlands barely. It is only 30 kms long between Pamban Island and Rameshwaram Island. It is religiously important as Hindus that Lord Rama built this bridge to save his beloved wife Sita from Ravanan in Lanka. It was destroyed by a storm in 15th century.This bridge is mentioned in Ramayana, the Indian epic by Valmiki.
The Pamban Island is connected to Indian mainland by the famous Pamban Bridge that was constructed in 1914. There is the road bridge and the cantilever railway bridge.
Those who are interested in marine life can visit the Gulf of Mannar National Park which lies in the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve popular for marine biodiversity. There are 21 islands there with mudflats, beaches, estuaries and forests. There you can see sea animals like sea cow, sea horse, sea cucumbers, dolphins etc. It’s a wonder world with 3600 species of flora and fauna of marine life.
