Udaipur is a beautiful city in Rajasthan. It is known for “Lake City” because of having the most beautiful lakes in India. It also have majestic palaces of the bygone Rajput Era. Many palaces are luxury hotels now. Udaipur is also known as “The Venice of the East”.The lakes are Pichola Lake, Udai Sagar, Fateh Sagar and Swaroop Sagar.
Lake Pichola has a length of 4 kms and a width of 3 kms. This is an artificial lake built by Maharana Udai Singh. There are bathing ghats and washing ghats. Lake Palace stands in the middle, in the heart of Lake Pichola. It’s a shallow lake and is esily dried up during drought.
Lake Palace
It was built in the 18th century. It is situated in a beautiful setting, in the Jag Niwas Island in Lake Pichola. The palace is made of marble. It was a summer palace during royalty but now its been converted to a 5 star luxury hotel under the prestigious Taj Hotel Group.
Jag Mandir is yet another island like Jag Niwas in the Lake Pichola and has a garden courtyard. Shah Jahan took refuge here during revolt against Aurangazeb, his father. The HRH Hotel Group runs a restaurant here.
Monsoon Palace or Sajjan Garh Palace was the Maharajas’ Summer Resort which is situated on the hill above the lakes. The Palace collects rain water throughout the year.
Jagdish Temple is a Hindu Temple located in the middle of the Udaipur City. It was built in Indo-Aryan style by Maharana Jagat Singh. It is one of the most popular tourist places. Rajasthani paintings and dresses are available here.
The Fateh Sagar Lake is located north of Lake Pichola. It is artificial lake built by Maharaja Jai Singh in late 17th century. After heavy rains, it was reconstructed by Maharana Fateh Singh.
Sahelion ki Bari was for the women attendants of a princess who accompanied her, a part of dowry. They were 48 women. There are gardens with Lotus Pools, fountains that are elephant-shaped and marble pavilions too. The water of the fountain comes from lake gushing via ducts.
Gulab Bagh is a garden of roses built by Maharaja Sajjan Singh which lies to east of Lake Pichola. There is a library with old books and handwritten manuscripts. There is also a zoo with many animals like leopards, tigers, birds etc. Children can enjoy well with mini train and playing around.
Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal is a museum of folk arts which hosts puppet shows in the auditorium.
Maharana Pratap Memorial also known as Moti Magri which is situated on Pearl Hill or Moti Magri, is a memorial of Maharana Pratap, the famous Rajput Hero with his horse, Chetak.
Bagore-ki-Haveli is an old building built on Lake Pichola’s waterfront at Gangori Ghat. It stages traditional dance of Rajasthan and music.
Ahar Cenotaphs is located to Udaipur’s East and has nineteen cenotaphs belonging to the Maharanas of Mewar. One is of Maharana Amar Singh. The Ahar Museum is located to the east of Udaipur which has earthern pottery and sculptures of BC era.
Shilpgram is located in north-west Udaipur which is a crafts village. One of the biggest Annual crafts fair is held there. People from all over India display their arts and crafts work.
Udaipur Solar Observatory is the only solar Observatory in Asia and is situated in Lake Fateh Sagar on an island in its centre.
